SODA, String Orchestra of Decatur and Atlanta, began its inaugural season in September 2010 with 18 students. The idea of SODA, is to allow students the opportunity to play in an ensemble outside of school or private lessons. I hope for SODA to be a stepping stone for the more advanced high school orchestras that are available in the area. The students will learn the basics of playing in an orchestra, such as how to follow a conductor, how to lead a section, how to create a beautiful sound, and most importantly, how to listen and play with other instruments.
If you already have some experience with orchestral playing, there is another group that is geared towards more advanced young players. CODA (Chamber Orchestra of Decatur and Atlanta) is a group for 6th through 12th graders (by audition) that plays more advanced music in a chamber setting. The players will have the opportunity to be leaders within SODA in addition to having a challenge within the chamber group.
Currently, we have violin, viola and cello students between 3rd and 12th grade. SODA will be accepting new applicants for the group every August and January. If you would like more information, please see the REGISTER tab.
What makes SODA different than all the other string orchestras/youth symphonies in the area??
SODA/CODA plays very similar level music to the other groups in town. However, since we are smaller in size, your child will get much more personal attention and be expected to really learn and understand their music, since there are less people on their individual part. They will also get the opportunity (in CODA for example), to play actual string quartet repertoire - something that is not possible in larger ensembles.
