Construction has commenced on the Sullivan County International Airport modernisation project in the US state of New York.

The initiative is aimed at transforming the airport into a gateway for the Catskill region.

The project received $18.5m in funding from the state governor’s (Kathy Hochul) $230m Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition.

This investment was first announced by Hochul in September 2022 and is aimed at revitalising nine upstate airports and adapting them for the 21st century.

The Sullivan County International Airport project in the Catskill Mountains will see the construction of a new 15,000ft² energy-efficient terminal, replacing the current 55-year-old terminal.

Hochul said: “Airports are the front doors to our upstate communities and vital economic engines for the region.
