The Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has announced the completion of a domestic flood control structure in Ramon Magsaysay, Zamboanga del Sur.

The project, located in Barangay Katipunan, included the construction of a 228.4m slope protection and a 2m walkway, enhancing flood resilience and soil preservation.

Construction was managed by the DPWH Zamboanga del Sur 1st District Engineering Office (DEO) and completed with an investment of 55m pesos ($0.944m).

The structure is expected to mitigate the degradation of the riverbed and safeguard low-lying communities against the overflow from Dipolo River.

DPWH Regional Office 9 director Cayamombao Dia said: “Local folks are now at ease knowing that they have a sturdy structure to safeguard their homes and livelihood from untoward incidents caused by excessive flooding, especially during rainy days or typhoons.”

In addition, the DPWH has finished the concreting of a two-lane, 393m farm-to-market road (FMR) in Magdiwang, Romblon.

According to DPWH Regional Office IV-B director Gerald Pacanan, this development will enhance the transportation of local agricultural products, including coconuts, vegetables, and root crops, to the town’s major markets.

Pacanan said: “Farming is the main source of livelihood in the community, hence, through this paved FMR, farmers and local entrepreneurs in the remote areas of Magdiwang will experience smoother, convenient, and cost-efficient delivery of their farm produce to the neighbouring towns and municipalities.”

The FMR project has been executed by the DPWH Romblon DEO,

It included the construction of a Portland cement concrete pavement road, the installation of a pipe culvert, and sections of grouted riprap and stone masonry.

Funded through the 2023 DPWH Infrastructure Program, the project had a budget of 11.9m pesos.

Earlier this month, the DPWH announced the completion of a domestic road rehabilitation project in Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro.
