has been subcontracted for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Sound Transit’s motorway project in the US.

This contract, valued at approximately $31m and awarded by contractor Skanska USA, is set to provide roadway improvements on the Interstate 405 (I-405) corridor in Bothell for four-and-a-half miles.

The project, which will be included as part of Granite’s first-quarter 2024 CAP, is designed to improve transportation mobility and reliability in Bothell and the surrounding areas.

It includes the addition of express toll lane capacity, direct access to state motorways, and improved regional transit service connections.

Construction of one new express toll lane in each direction between the south of State Route (SR) 522 and SR 527 is expected to benefit motorists.

The plan also involves widening I-405 through the SR 522 interchange and building direct access ramps to the express toll lanes on SR 522.

A partial direct access interchange at SR 527 will be created to connect with the Canyon Park and Ride.

Furthermore, the project will facilitate enhanced connections for regional transit services at both the University of Washington Bothell Station (SR 522) and Canyon Park Station (SR 527).

A new transit-only Bus Rapid Transit station is also set to be introduced along the I-405 corridor.

Granite project manager Beth Duffus said: “Granite is excited to build a local relationship with Skanska in the Seattle market and continue to support WSDOT and the travelling public in Western Washington.

“Supporting WSDOT on this project complements Granite’s vertically integrated business in Seattle as Granite’s Smith Island asphalt plant will produce 195,000t of 0.5in HMA and recycle 50,000t of RAP. Securing this backlog helps the region with consistent paving backlog for the next three years and provides a strong foundation to continue to grow this side of the business.”

Granite’s scope of work is anticipated to be completed by December 2027, with the project scheduled to commence last month.

In February 2024, Granite secured the final construction option for the Polychrome Area Improvements construction manager/general contractor project in Denali National Park.
